Cold Smoked Capelin Recalled Over Clostridium Botulinum Concerns

Cold Smoked Capelin Recalled Due to Contamination Concerns

North Fish USA Inc. Issues Recall

August 9, 2024

North Fish USA Inc. of Hallandale, Florida, is recalling imported 9-ounce packages of Cold Smoked Capelin due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness. The affected product was found to be over 5 inches in length, exceeding the allowable size for this type of fish.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled Cold Smoked Capelin are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The product should not be consumed, as Clostridium botulinum can cause severe foodborne illness known as botulism.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised the public that consuming this product could pose a serious health risk. Symptoms of botulism may include difficulty breathing, paralysis, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

North Fish USA is working with the FDA to investigate the source of the contamination. The company has apologized for any inconvenience this recall may cause and is committed to ensuring the safety of its products.
